Without a doubt, one of the distinguishing features of Christmas is the emphasis on luxury food and drink. All the restaurants have their seasonal menus printed and ready to go, and the supermarkets have stocked their shelves with festive goodies.
While children across the country are excitedly planning their presents from Santa, all the adults are thinking about the holidays, what they’ll be doing, where they’ll be spending Christmas day, and asking themselves ‘what will we eat this year?’.
As the great Bing Crosby sings, ‘it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’.
And if you found yourself on a TV Quiz show, where the question was “name a time of year you would send someone a hamper”, the best answer is sure to be “Christmas.”
Look up the definition of a Christmas hamper in Wikipedia, and you’ll see “the traditional contents are non-perishable food items particularly seasonal favourites such as fruitcake or plum pudding, chocolate, nuts, jams, biscuits, honey, smoked or dried meats, and cheese.” (Just reading that definition makes me go ‘mmm mmm’.)
And the focus of today’s Vendor Spotlight, The Great British Charcuterie, has all the smoked and dried meats, and cheese wrapped up and ready to go.
Surprisingly, they only opened their doors just over a year ago.
A father and son team based in Brighton, they stock a range of meats and cheeses from across the UK. The meats include Air-Dried Hams, Beautiful Bresaola, Salamis & Nduja, while the cheeses include Westcombe Cheddar, Colston Bassett Stilton & Stinking Bishop, as well as Charcoal Cheddar.
Luckily for us, they don’t just sell these on an individual basis, they also create themed boxes of curated delights. Perfect as a gift for a friend or family member who appreciates the finer things in life at this time of year.
Take, for example, the Festive Favourites Box. A box whose products ooze luxury. It contains:
Black Cow Vintage Cheddar Truckle – Black cow, based in West Dorset, make this fantastic cheddar from the leftover curds from the production of their stunning pure milk vodka. It has a lip-smacking creamy flavour with great crystallisation.
