The final week of January 2016 saw the launch of our inaugural BoroughBox™ Discovery Club, with Box No1 hitting the highways to their final destinations. Mixed emotions ran through the team at HQ, hope, fear, anxiety, relief, feelings akin to parents waving off their children on the first day of school. We all want the day to come and we want our little one to make new friends, stand on their own feet and grow up to be strong and successful – but the journey is just beginning. The lucky recipients of the box have an opportunity to begin tasting, understanding and learning about artisan & specialist foods. It’s something we are very excited about. Do make sure you sign up for Box No2 if you’re not a subscriber yet.
Although the Discovery Club is to be curated by both myself and the fantastic Dr Deborah Quinn, I confess that this first was my choosing entirely. I wanted the journey to begin with a theme personal to me, and that is Borough, an area where I’ve lived and worked for many years and which contributes to our brand name BoroughBox™. A key location in the Borough area which makes it such a foodie destination, is the world famous market at London Bridge next to Southwark Cathedral. This was our source and inspiration for the products in Box No1:
Pink Himalayan Salt from Spice Mountain. With over one hundred herbs, spices and spice blends, Spice Mountain has one of the greatest collections of spices in London. Owner Magali Russie sources her spices direct from producers where possible, spice plantations in Goa and Kerala, vanilla farms in Mauritius, saffron producers in Spain and Kashmir. Pumpkin Seed Oil, Luxury Fig & Walnut Cake and Infused Honey from Taste Croatia. Husband and wife Chris and Ana-Maria are the team behind Taste Croatia offering a tempting range of truffle, olive oil and sweet products from Istria – a region of Croatia which is famous for its exceptional cuisine. The pumpkin seed oil is a great product to have in the cupboard for both drizzling and adding to salads and dishes. Organic Juice from Chegworth Valley, a family-run fruit farm established in the beautiful Kent countryside in 1983. The juices are produced from tree ripened, hand selected fruit which is pressed on site at the farm in small batches, often within hours of being picked. This is then lightly pasteurised to preserve the natural colours and flavours of the juice before being bottled on site.
Organic Life Tea. These organic wellness teas are a fusion of teas and traditional age-old herbal home recipes embraced in villages for general well being. The herbs are grown locally by our community of small hold farmer, well versed in growing traditional herbs to retain the best of their properties and are certified organic.
Handmade Fudge by Whirld, an artisan confectionery company set up by Justine Cather – founder of award winning fudge company Burnt Sugar. The range of delicious artisan sweets are all handmade to traditional recipes using natural ingredients such as unrefined golden Fair trade sugar, cream and butter. Variations include Smashing Toffee, Gooey Chewy Nougat, Far Out Fudge, Bubbly Buzzin’ Honeycomb, Chilli Chocolate and Sea Salt Caramel.
And just for good measure there were a few celebratory treats thrown in to mark the occasion. Those who received the box will know what I’m talking about.
From Box No2 onwards you should keep an eye on the blog for wellbeing postings exclusive to our Discovery Club members from Dr Deb. The information will be structured and informative so you can start to make simple changes that will make the most difference to your general health and wellbeing. As Deb says “Because you are an individual make sure you don’t use products or foods that would interact with your medications or that you have known allergies/sensitivities to. Anything that doesn’t feel right, just stop. In the next few weeks we will start an info journey selecting key tips and facts to establish better foundations for your health and wellbeing. Enjoy delicious recipes for all the family using the carefully selected wellbeing products in your monthly box.”
