It’s January and here at BoroughBox we are taking this month to celebrate and focus on health and superfoods. With Paleo diets on the uprise, and the widening search for healthier breakfast options on everyone’s mind, it’s time we focused on one of our artisanal producers that does exactly what it says on the bag. Does the flavours of ‘Vanilla and Almond’ tingle your tastebuds? How about ‘Cocoa Nibs and Cashew’? Meet Qnola, the first quinoa granola product, EVER! Their range holds no compromise with nutritionally charged breakfast goods free from gluten, grains, dairy and refined sugar.
We took some time with Qnola’s founder, Danielle Copperman as we were dying to know more.
A Paleo lifestyle seems to be on the uprise, where does Qnola fit into this?
Qnola is grain free, unlike standard granolas which are made with, as the name suggests, grains and commonly oats. I developed the first recipe for Qnola when I adopted a strict paleo diet. People following a paleo diet generally favour high protein foods, which is why quinoa makes a great addition to paleo diets. Many people cut out all grains including rice, so quinoa is the perfect high protein alternative.
What would you say to people, who claim they have no time in the mornings to do breakfast properly?
I would say, tell me about it!? No one has enough time in the mornings, which is why our Wake Up Well brand ethos is all about encouraging people to wake up 10 – 30 minutes earlier to take time to take care of themselves in the morning. We encourage this time to be used in any way that allows a person to do something they enjoy or do something to nourish the body and mind such as exercise or meditation; then we focus on breakfast. Qnola is the perfect option for busy people on the go because it requires no preparation – you just put it in a bowl and add milk or yoghurt. Fruit, superfood powders and nut butters are optional but again, take no time to add to a bowl.
What is your personal morning ritual?
When I can be structured, I wake up around 7.30 or 8am. I sit in bed for a few minutes thinking about what’s planned for the day. I FaceTime my boyfriend in Sweden and if he’s awake we chill in bed for a few minutes before I have to get going. Then I make a hot drink – either ginger juice and lemon or adaptogens in hot water before doing 1 hour or 45 minutes of Strala yoga. Sometimes I have a class in the morning but often I take myself through my own sequences. If I don’t have time for a full session I will stretch for 10-20 minutes and sometimes meditate for 10 minutes too, depending on how I’m feeling. If I’m working from home I then shower and make breakfast whilst answering emails. If I’m working from my office, I usually walk 45 minutes to get there. If I have meetings, I will have a smoothie or Qnola for breakfast, and if I’m working from home i’ll make more of a brunch time meal – generally of eggs and avocado or leftovers.
What is your personal favourite flavour from the range, and why?
At the moment my favourite is Vanilla Chai – I love the comforting spices and the strong vanilla flavour but from the full time flavours, Beetroot & Pistachio is my favourite. It’s naturally sweet and has a lot of flavour and I love the creamy pistachio flavour combined with the full body flavours of the beetroot powder.
